Resolving the .local TLD in Ubuntu

Topics: Domain Name System

Ubuntu can resolve .local hostnames through mDNS after installing libnss-mdns.

sudo apt-get install libnss-mdns

The hosts entry in /etc/nsswitch.conf should now look like this:

hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

Hostnames ending with .local should now resolve.
